  新西兰将向一名错误监禁18年的男子支付490万新元

  惠灵顿,8月18日 - 新西兰政府周五宣布,一名因谋杀而被错误监禁近18年的男子将获得数百万新元的赔偿。

In 1986, a man was stabbed to death during a burglary in Auckland, and Alan Hall was sentenced to life imprisonment.

There was no forensic evidence linking Hall to the scene, and the attacker was said to be of a different height and race, but Hall was still convicted.

Hall was granted parole in 1994 but was sent back to prison in 2012 for breaching parole conditions. He was finally released last year, acquitted.

The New Zealand Supreme Court acknowledged that the original trial was unfair, showing "extreme incompetence" or "deliberate and mistaken strategies to secure a conviction."

Justice Minister Deborah Russell said on Friday that Hall had received NZ$4.9 million (approximately RM13.5 million) in compensation.

Russell said the New Zealand government "apologizes unreservedly for his wrongful conviction and imprisonment."

"I acknowledge that apologies and compensation can never fully compensate for the injustice suffered by Hall," Russell added.

In a statement to local media, Hall's family said the struggle to clear his name had ended, and they felt relieved. Alan was 24 when he was arrested. He is now 61. - AFP
